The PhD opportunity is focused on understanding how common small exoplanets are. The researcher will use the upcoming ESA PLATO mission to study the occurrence of these small exoplanets, using state-of-the-art statistical techniques, including Bayesian statistics and machine learning.
The successful candidate will have the chance to contribute to shaping the direction of this project while enhancing their analytical skills, deepening their physics knowledge, and gaining valuable expertise in data science. This project will also offer opportunities for international travel, presenting findings at global conferences, and conducting novel observations with telescopes worldwide. The successful applicant will join a dynamic, diverse research team, benefiting from both technical training and the development of essential soft skills.
Profile’s requirements
- Undergraduate (BSc/MSc) in astrophysics, planetary science, computer science, or related degree.
- A background or relevant experience in physics and/or data science is helpful but lack thereof can be overcome with strong motivation. Alternatively, a motivated student with a strong background in computer science or data science rather than astrophysics will also be considered.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills are a bonus, as is evidence of motivation, leadership and creativity.
